Charlotte, North Carolina
Description: SouthPark Mall, a 95 acre site located approximately five miles southeast of Charlotte’s city center, is considered to be the “cornerstone” of the SouthPark area. Anchored by Hecht’s, Nordstroms, Belks, Dillard’s, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and soon to be Neiman Marcus, and with over 120 specialty stores, the mall encompasses a total area of approximately 1.4 million square feet. The mall was originally constructed in 1969. Expansion of the SouthPark Mall commenced in 1999 and is currently nearing completion. The expansion will eventually add nearly 600,000 square feet of retail space, four parking decks and a mixed-use outparcel within an additional 10 acres. CESI’s task was to provide geotechnical evaluations, field engineering, and construction quality control services during expansion of the mall site to transition it from a 1970s-style suburban mall to a “town center” for the SouthPark area. Pictured is Symphony Park, which accommodates the Charlotte Symphony’s Concert Series and provides a new park for adjoining neighborhoods. CESI engineering personnel also designed the state regulated dam that impounds the lake at Symphony Park and the foundations for the band shell and stage. Our current services are focused on the inspection of deep foundations for the elevated two-level Neiman Marcus store, quality control testing for a new parking deck, and foundation design for The Village at SouthPark with below-grade parking, street level retail, and 5 upper levels of condominiums/townhouses.
